"""Time series low rank factor portfolio.

Characteristics don't predict returns directly. They set a stock's exposure to a
handful of common return drivers, which is why the predictable part of the cross
section ends up low rank. Most models estimate that structure with a monthly cross
sectional regression. This one does it the other way round: each characteristic
becomes a long short portfolio, ranked within the month, demeaned, and scaled to
unit gross, and its daily returns come from applying month t's weights to month
t + 1's daily returns. That builds a daily panel of managed portfolio returns, so
the covariance of a few hundred portfolios comes from thousands of observations
rather than a few hundred monthly ones.

The low rank structure is estimated on that panel. Its leading directions are
linear combinations of characteristic portfolios and can be traded directly. A
network maps characteristics to exposures over those directions, conditioned on a
pooled cross sectional context so a stock's exposure reflects the composition of
its month, and it's trained on the realised Sharpe of the resulting book.

Directions aren't chosen by variance alone. Ranking eigenvectors that way rewards
how much a direction moves, not how much it earns, so a high Sharpe but low
variance direction would lose out to a big unrewarded one. Each direction's squared
mean return is added to its variance before ranking to correct for that. Because
these directions are individually tradeable, rather than rotation invariant the way
the instrumented construction is, this choice actually changes the portfolio.

The book combines the directions under exponentially weighted moments, projects out
market beta without an intercept so the net tilt survives, and scales to a
volatility target. That overlay did more for performance than any change to the
signal, since Sharpe is scale invariant and the whole gain comes from timing
leverage against conditions the covariance can already see coming.

The eigenbasis and the network are both refit yearly on months up to that year's
cutoff, so nothing from the future enters.

CTF Admin Modifications (2026-09-08):
--------------------------------------
1. Added a requirements.txt containing torch==2.13.0.
Reason: the submission had no dependency file, and torch is not among the
packages pre-installed in the submission runtime (which provides only pandas,
numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, pyarrow, boto3, polars and joblib). Without a
dependency file the image build takes its hardcoded-fallback path, so torch
would never be installed and the run would stop at "import torch" before any
model code executed. 2.13.0 is the earliest release with no outstanding
advisories and it ships a Linux wheel for the Python 3.13 runtime.

2. Added a suppression comment on line 213 for the descending sort of the
   eigenvalue ordering.
Reason: our scanners read the reversal slice on that line as a string-reversal
obfuscation technique, which is a false positive for reversing a numpy index
array. Both the pattern scan and the syntax-tree scan flagged it at high
severity, so the submission would have been rejected at the first security gate.
   No behavior changed.

3. Added a suppression comment on line 504 for the broad exception handler
   guarding the warm-start state load.
Reason: our scanners reject catch-all exception handlers that do not re-raise,
because they can mask errors. The handler here is a deliberate fallback to a
cold start when the previous year's weights cannot be loaded, so it is marked
as reviewed and allowed. No behavior changed.

After these changes: no follow-up required. This model fits four seeds per year
and estimates a covariance every month, so it should be run on the gpunormal
partition with --gres=gpu:1 and `apptainer run --nv`."""
